Greetings from Asbury Park – Tom Gilmour Director of Commerce + Good Times 8/5/10

Weekly Updates
Greetings from Asbury Park:
Another great weekend and we are preparing for another.  Patti and I had a wonderful romantic dinner at Moonstruck on Saturday night.  Luke and Howard always do a great job and the specials were truly quite special.  They were the pioneers that got our whole dining extravaganza started.  There’s something on our menu for everyone this weekend, so let’s get started!  Only in Asbury Park!

It’s the first Saturday of the month, so it must be First Saturday in Asbury Park.  We invite you to LUAU, this month’s summer party.  Random Test Reggae will be rocking on the Press Plaza outdoor stage and Vini “Maddog” Lopez will perform some songs with some talented kids from the Boys and Girls Club, right in front of the Upstage Club.  The free trolley will be running so make sure you stop by Appliance Brokers at Main & Fourth for some “thrillin grillin” burgers, dogs and garlic shrimp.  Belly dancing at Synaxis.  Itsy Bitsy Garden Spaces at Main & Fourth will be giving out free leis and discount coupons.  Hot Sands is having a reception and work demonstration with resident glass artists.  ArtsCAP  is exhibiting photographs of local Jersey Shore artist, Susan Fairgrieve at their gallery located at 658 Cookman.  Donate new school supplies for Asbury Park students and get a free gift at The Passion Group and while you are there, enter to win a $500 gift basket courtesy of the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce.  Festivities start at 6 and go to 10 pm and beyond.  Free Parking in the Bangs Avenue Garage thanks to TAKA.   There’s so much going and so many offers, I can’t fit it all here.  Go to www.asburyparkchamber.com for all the details.  Only in Asbury Park! “E komo mai”

We made the final arrangements for the Asbury Park 5K earlier in the week with race director Phil Hinck.  This year’s event promises to be the best ever.  Proceeds go to the Asbury Park Urban Enterprise Zone Program and the Boys and Girls Club of  Monmouth County.  Go to www.jsrc.org/clubraces/asburypark5k .  I hope to see you there.  I have a doctor’s appoint this week and I hope to get the OK to run.

Only 10 days left to catch Vanishing Asbury the wonderful exhibition of images of Asbury Park recently lost at Heaven Art & Antiques at 721 Cookman Ave.

“Simple Pleasures-Beauty Life & Nature” a photography exhibition featuring the solo work by Lauren Penza will be on display at The Gallery 13, 658 cookman Avenue starting Sat., Aug 7th (6-10 pm) until Aug. 29th.   Is it just me, or is Asbury Park now the place for photography?

The Asbury Galleria in the Convention Hall Grand Arcade is hosting journalist and award winning playwright, Alex Austin for a book signing and reading of his book and upcoming podcast, “The Red Album of Asbury Park Remixed.” from 2 to 4 pm on Sunday, Aug. 8th.

New Jersey Friends of Clearwater is looking for volunteers to help with the 35th Annual Clearwater Festival on Sat. August 21st.  Call Lyn Humphrey at 732.539.6806 or email lynn22353@yahoo.com if you can help.  Thanks
