Greetings from Asbury Park – Tom Gilmour Director of Commerce + Good Times 8/12/10

Weekly Updates
Greetings from Asbury Park:
Another great weekend!  Patti and I had such a great Saturday night in Asbury Park last weekend.  It kicked off with dinner at Bistro Ole.  We hadn’t been there in a while and it was better than ever.  Certain restaurants in the city are always a great time!  Then it was off to First Saturday.  What a fun and interesting time.  There were so many people in the city!  At Monday’s AP Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors’ meeting some retailers were reporting their best First Saturday ever!  HUGE!  In spite of this economy, we are rockin’ quo.  Only in Asbury Park!  So, let the weekend begin . . . . . . . .

This is the last call to come out and participate in this year’s Asbury Park 5K.  This Sat, Aug. 14th at 8:30 am, we are expecting 1,400 runners of all levels to sample one of the Jersey Shore’s great races.  We also have a full slate of kids’ events.  Unfortunately, my doc delivered the message, that I will not be able to duplicate my incredible performance in 2009.   All runners will get free access to our great beaches, just show the ticket attendant your bib.  I encourage you to sign up and support this great event that benefits The Boys and Girls Club of Monmouth County and the Asbury Park Urban Enterprise Zone Program.  Patti and I will be stationed at the AP Rotary Club’s water stop right outside the Wonder Bar.  Go to www.asburypark.jsrc.org.  Sign up now!

Last chance to check out Vanished Asbury, an exhibition of images “no more” in the city.  Patti and I checked it out last weekend and it is worth a stop.  I even purchased a very cool Dennis Carroll print.  The exhibit is on display at Heaven Arts & Antiques at 721 Cookman Ave.  Be there!
Summer Lights:  The Center of Asbury Park is holding a very unique and cool fundraiser at 613 Sunset Avenue, hosted by Carlos Hatch & Brian O’Hea on Sat., Aug. 14th from 7 to 10 pm.    For additional details and tickets, check out
www.thecenterinap.com/pages/Summer_Lights.  Only in Asbury Park!

Revision Theatre will be presenting the world premiere of The Bikinis in the historic Carousel House starting this Thursday, Aug. 12th and running through August 22nd.  If for some reason, you were one of the very few that missed Tommy, make sure you catch The Bikinis.  For info go to www.RevisionTheatre.org.

Bull Dog Clip Productions, Gallery 13, and the Brick Photo Center are sponsoring a very cool photography contest.  They have leveled the playing field.  For the $20 entry fee, you get a disposable camera.  Take your photos and return the camera.  They will get it developed and you will get a disk.  Everyone is working with equal equipment.  All cameras must be returned by August 26th so you better get going.  Just a warning, yours truly has entered.  Stay tuned!

I don’t know if you are feeling it, but there is an aura over the city – this is our summer!  It’s been a long time coming but it is here and there is no turning back.  I am so, so proud!  Proud of how far we have come.  Proud of all the great people who are here and working so hard to make sure Asbury Park stays “back.”  It is this community that is bringing back the city.  We invite you all to join us.  Only in Asbury Park!

Wishes for a wonderful and safe weekend,

Tom Gilmour
