Greetings from Asbury Park – Tom Gilmour Director of Commerce + Good Times 11/12/09

Weekly Updates
Greetings from Asbury Park:
I missed you last week.  Patti and I took a well earned and relaxing vacation to Mexico.   I took Stephen Crane and Tom Robbins along for the trip and really enjoyed some great books, lots of sunshine, and a great hotel.  As I was sitting on a very beautiful beach sipping some of those umbrella drinks, I couldn’t help but realize Asbury Park’s beach is also very beautiful and part of one great city.  We had a great time but it’s always good to be home.  Only in Asbury Park!

Last night, I was lucky to experience one of those great musical events that happen all the time in Asbury Park.  Pat Guadagno had a CD release of his latest offering “that’s a Bob Dylan song” at McLoone’s Supper Club.  Part of the show was dedicated to Pat’s annual tribute to Bob Dylan that is highlighted on the new CD.  It was very cool!  Only in Asbury Park!

Tonight there is a special fundraiser for the Asbury Park Mounted Police Unit. It will be held at Brickwall Tavern at 522 Cookman.  This is an effort you need to support.  Go to the city web site at www.cityofasburypark.com  for additional information.  Be there!

I just got an email from APUEZ Board and AP Sustainable Committee member, Michelle Knapik, sharing the news that the City of Asbury Park has received 2009 Sustainable Jersey Certification.  The city is part of an elite group of municipalities that have achieved the prestigious Sustainable Jersey certification in the first year of the program.  AP will be recognized at the first-annual Sustainable Jersey awards luncheon next week at the NJ League of Municipalities Conference.  HUGE!

The Community Bank of Asbury Park will be hosting a “First Time Home Buyer Seminar” on November 17, 2009 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.  RSVP to Peter Leyman at pleyman@rfhbank.com or call 732.775.1079.

Nov 6 through 15 is Jersey Shore Restaurant Week.  Participating establishments will be offering a three-course prixe fixe menu for either $20.09 or $30.09.  Many Asbury Park restaurants are part of this cool promotion.  Check out www.jerseyshorerestaurantweek.com for details.

Next Thursday, Nov. 19th, the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce will host one of its great business networking parties.  This month the event will take place at Carmine’s (the best fried clams) located at 162 Main Street.  Why not join us and promote your business and promote Asbury Park.  There’s a ton of reasons why businesses are still coming to Asbury Park .  Call Cindi at 732.775.7676 or email her at cindi@asburyparkchamber.com to let her know you are coming.

Every Wednesday night, the Asbury Park Film Initiative is offering a movie and dinner special.  Every Thursday, the Mayor’s Players featuring Kevin Sanders, Vel Johnson and Donnie Harell are cooking up some smooth jazz at Synaxis.

Every great city has a great calendar.  The Asbury Park Fire Department in partnership with ArtsCAP is creating that calendar as I’m writing this.  The finished product will be sold as a fundraiser for both organizations.  Can’t wait for the release.  Stay tuned!

Wherever you travel, wherever you roam, it’s always good to be back in the Park.  Only in Asbury Park!

Wishes for a great weekend!
