Another amazing weekend! Patti and I almost made it to all the stops on the City Wide Yard Sale last Saturday including old friends Gail and Roy Helrick’s house and the Lesinski’s up the street.  First Saturday was one of the best eve!  It has turned into an awesome evening of great art.  We finally made our Sunday morning trek to the 7th Avenue beach with the NY Times, coffee and bagels.  No better place to spend your Sunday morning than on the beach in Asbury Park. Sunday evening right before the storm hit, we headed over to The ShowRoom to catch The Queen of Versallies.  Confession:  I am having serious trouble keeping up with all that is happening in the city.  It now takes me about 8 hours of TG time to assemble Tuesday’s event listing.  HUGE!  Only in Asbury Park!

And speaking of the ShowRoom, Mike Sodano gave me a tour of The ”NEW” ShowRoom that is under construction across the street from the city’s favorite indie movie house, The “current” ShowRoom located at 708 Cookman Avenue.   The new place is amazing!  There will be three theaters, popcorn, meeting space and opportunities for live performances.  Mike also shoed me the back roof deck that could/might be additional theater space.  Wow!   Looks like a fall opening.  HUGE!  Stay tuned!
The ever popular and growing Asbury Park Concert Band takes the boardwalk tonight on the Fifth Avenue boardwalk with “Music From Around the World” (Children’s Concert) at 7 pm.  Several shore area students will be appearing tonight with the band.  This is a free concert sponsored by The Community Fund of NJ, Tim McLoone’s Supper Club and the Asbury Park Musical Heritage Foundation.  Arrive early to secure a good spot.  Only in Asbury Park Where Music Lives!

The Summer Carnival is in the city this week, August 8th thru 12th in Atlantic Park.  Rides, games, food, & music

Looking for some theater this weekend? Well you came to the right city.  The Premier Theater company will be presenting Fiddler on the Roof starting Richard Herzog in the Paramount Theatre on Friday, August 10th & Saturday, August 11th at 8 pm and on Sunday, August 12th at 1 pm.  ReVision Theatre continues its run of Pippin in the Theatre at Saint George on Thursday, Friday & Saturday at 8 pm and Sundays & Wednesdays at 7 pm.  Another new offering, Brightness, opens in the Fifth Avenue Pavilion on the boardwalk. This interactive party-play is performed by the New York based theater group Paratroupe.  Shows are Thursday through Sunday starting at 8 pm  Only in Asbury Park!

The Clearwater Festival returns to Asbury Park’s Sunset Park this Saturday, August 11th from 11 am to 7 pm.  This is a great environmental festival full of great music and tons of cool stuff for kids.  The Cobra Brothers, Arlan Feiles, The Wag, O’Neil & Martin, and Three Meries will entertain on the Main Stage.  The first year Clearwater moved from Sandy Hook to Asbury Park was 2002 (I think).  Patti and I were sitting in front of a stage in Bradley Park with about twenty other folks and Bruce pops up on the stage.  It was amazing then and it is amazing now.  Come out and support this great organization.  Staying Green!

How about some music?  Tonight Galactic will be at the Stone Pony featuring Corey Glover of Living Colour.  This is an amazing band from New Orleans.  Tomorrow, Saturday evening, John Eddie and his Nashville Band will be at the Stone Pony.  Sad to report, Status Green will be performing a farewell show at Asbury Lanes also on Satrday night.  Only in Asbury Park Where Music Lives!

And opera is back in Asbury Park; this time at The ShowRoom!  A special screening of Norma will take place on Sunday, August 12th at noon.  Norma was filmed at the stunning outdoor arena at the Teatro Antico, in Tacormina, Italy.  Norma is considered Vincenzo Bellini’s magnum opus, and the apex of the bel canto operatic style.  The titular high priestess is filled with treasonous desire for a Roman soldier, forcing her to choose between duty and love.  Bravo!
Do you like to dance?  Shakin The Shore Dance Party takes place this Saturday, August 11th at 8 pm at the VFW Hall (4,000sq. ft. dance floor), 701 Lake Avenue.  The evening features Ron Sunshine & Full Swing.  There will be workshops and lesson during the day.  Go to www.shakrhythmroll.com for details and tickets.  Boogie!

Confections of A Rock Star has opened! YEA!  This bakery is Asbury Park’s newest arrival to the 500 block of Cookman Avenue. The shop is a showpiece and worth the trip.  Once inside you will realize very quickly that this is no ordinary bakery and their product is quite unique.  I was forced to sample many cupcakes during the build out.  Asbury Park has attracted a new destination to the downtown.  Check it out!  Delicious!
The Surfrider Foundation is teaming up with Barefoot Wine to host a Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project this Saturday, August 11th from 3 to 5 pm on the North Beach.  The participants will clean up the North beach and then move into Loch Arbour.  Following the cleanup, there will be an after party at Langosta Lounge.

Father Bob of The Center of Asbury Park has put out a call to help them replenish their food pantry.  They are in need of some basic staples:  Cereal, Peanut Butter, Jelly and Canned Vegetables.  The Center of Asbury Park is located at 806 third Avenue.  Thank you.

As I mentioned it is hard to keep up with all the happenings going on in the city so here’s some advanced notice of some events to mark on your calendar:

August 18th:  The Midtown Men (4 stars from the original cast of Jersey Boys) at the Paramount Theatre to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth & Middlesex Counties.
August 19th:  AP Historical Society’s Art Show on the Boardwalk.

August 25th:  Nick Clemons presents The Asbury Park Comedy & Music Festival at the Paramount Threatre
September 1st -3rd:  Asbury Park Labor Day BBQ in Bradley Park
September 7th – 9th:  Oysterfest
September 8th:  10th Anniversary Asbury Park Mayor’s Bash at the Stone Pony

Good luck trying to figure out what you are going to do in Asbury Park this weekend.  I am planning on taking Friday off, so let’s get this weekend going

Wishes for a wonderful, sunny and cool weekend,
