Greetings from Asbury Park:

8, 7, 6, 5 . . . . . Bamboozle! This city is so alive as we build up towards Friday’s 5 pm opening of the amazing Bamboozle Music Festival. Hope you have seen the main stage located just north of Convention Hall. We are well prepared for the 90,000 plus we expect to show up over this weekend. The weather gurus have blessed us with a sunny spring weekend. If you are coming for the festival plan ahead and leave early. The best ways to get here are on the train (North Jersey Coast Line), bus in from Bamboozle’s off-site parking lot at Monmouth Racetrack in Oceanport, and bike or hike. Parking in the city will be limited and moving in, out and around the city will be difficult. We are expecting a significant number of visitors, awesome music and beautiful weather. Many of you are thinking, if I’m not going to Bamboozle why would I come to Asbury Park this weekend? I think there are many of you out there in this catagory, but if you really know Asbury Park, you also know we never shutdown. Many of the business owners are reinventing themselves and actually expanding their reach. All the clubs have booked entertainment and will be treating this as another great Asbury Park weekend. SICA is actually bringing in 5 bands on Saturday night from 6 to 10 pm. Porta is planning on opening their other half of the builidng which is now called Abbot on Friday night. So, don’t wake up on Monday morning and think, man I really missed it – because you did! Only in Asbury Park!

Have you been down to the boardwalk lately? Notice all the new colors? They are the results of a project created and implemented by Jana Manning, a city resident and owner of Manning Design Group. Jana presented the idea to the City Council who gave her the green light. She rallied a group of artists and volunteers and repainted the beach badge booths, lockers, waste receptacles and lifeguard stands with an array of aqua, copper, magenta, brick and natural beach and driftwood colors. It has a real seaside, soothing feel. Anyone interested in volunteering for future projects (knowing Jana, there will be more) can contact her at jann@manningdesigngroup.com Huge!

Mark your calendars for May 30th & 31st, when the Asbury Park School District will present The Power of Art.   This is their 12th Annual Art Showcase that will take place in Convention Hall. Stay tuned!

Bamboozle Weekend – AP BUSINESS’
Employee Parking
in Bangs Ave. Garage

At the City Council meeting on Wednesday evening, May 16, 2012, the Council authorized the opening of the Bangs Avenue Garage for Bamboozle Weekend: Friday, May 18th from 5 pm to 2 am; Saturday, May 19th from 9 am to 2 am; and Sunday, May 20th from 9 am to 2 am. To assist with the large number of visitors and limited parking, the garage will be reserved for Asbury Park businesses’ employees only. 100 free parking spaces have been reserved. Funding to support this initiative will be provided by the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce and the Asbury Park Urban Enterprise Zone Program

All Asbury Park businesses are eligible to participate and receive one parking pass (one space). We are encouraging all employees to carpool. Special parking passes will be issued on a first come first served basis until all 100 passes have been issued. The passes will be available starting at 12 noon, Thursday, May 17, 2012 and ending at 2 pm. If the business owner is not available to pick up the pass they may have one of their employees attend. We will require identification from all participants. If an employee is sent, we will require in addition to identification, a letter from the employee or a current paystub.

Another great weekend coming up as we approach the first weekend (15 days to go) of the 2012 beach season. First Saturday was a great night with the opening of many new art exhibits. Make sure you check out Bob Gruen’s photography at 629 Gallery and the Color Power exhibit, highlighted in last Sunday’s NY Times, at Heaven Art & Antiques. Sunday afternoon, Patti and I launched our summer tradition of a boardwalk stroll and calamari at Langosta Lounge. Great!
On your mark, Get set . . . Bamboozle! Only 8 days to go. Hard to believe it is finally here. The City and Live Nation hosted three meetings this week to share our final plans with AP’s residents and our business community. After six months of preparation and planning we are ready to go. For all the details go to www.thebamboozle.com and check out the amazing lineup. Consider purchasing a weekend pass so you don’t miss out on any of the great music. Make plans early. The easiest way to get to the city will probably be NJ Transit. Live Nation has also set up offsite parking at Monmouth Racetrack in Oceanport, N.J. with shuttle service to Asbury Park. A quick check with the weather gurus has got me very excited! The forecast looks like it’s going to be one beautiful weekend. This promises to be an awesome way to launch the 2012 summer season. The Environmental Shade Tree Commission is creating an Asbury Park Community Garden on the West lawn of city hall. The boxes are set and have been lined. The soil will be delivered later this week. Asbury Park was again named a Tree City USA® community for 2011. Majestic!
I took a tour of the new and very close to opening, Springwood Center last Thursday. This is the first of what promises to be many new developments in the Springwood Avenue Redevelopment area. The facility will house AP’s new senior center, 8 affordable rental units, a police sub-station, and some very cool retail space on the street level. There will be a new café and a business incubator. Only in Asbury Park and on Springwood Avenue. Stay tuned!

SCULTOURE 2012 launches this Saturday May 12th . SICA and artsCAP are joining forces to expand the highly successful Urban Sculpture Park that will stretch from Long Branch into Asbury Park. The event will run from May 12th to September 16th. The launch kicks off at 11 am at SICA, 610 Cookman Avenue, with High Relief: SICA’s Annual NJ High School Sculpture Competition. The tour will officially open at 1 pm. Then, plan on ending up at SICA for the 6 pm Aft-Toure Party. For all the details go to www.sica.org
We are looking forward to meeting Felix Cavaliere tonight at Tim Mcloone’s Supper Club. Tomorrow night, it’s off to the AP Chamber of Commerce’s 2012 Carousel Awards where we honor the Passion Group, the Premier Theatre Company, the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel, Mayor Ed Johnson and Tony Pallagrosi. Great way to roll into the weekend. Only in Asbury Park!

Good morning! Apparently, I omitted a number of items on my event lisiting email yesterday. I knew this day would arrive someday and truth be told, it is very difficult to keep track of all that is going on. Huge!

Saturday evening at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel was one of those very, very special Asbury Park evenings for the 400+ people that attended the Asbury Park Music Heritage Foundation launch and the premiere of Asbury Park Musical Memories. What really made this gathering so special was the diverse audience representing all parts of our city. Music has always united the city and it warms my heart to see our music rising up again. Asbury Park Musical Memories was the major hit of the night. It captured the amazing Asbury Park musical scene from the 30′s to the early 70′s. Many musicians who created that scene were in the audience. Kudos to Suan Pellegrini the producer, her company Synergy Productions, the AP High School students who conducted the interview and the Monmouth University students who filmed and assisted with the editing. Prior to the screening we were entertained by an awesome group of young musicians called Sibling Rivalry. We enjoyed a “meet and greet” with the musicians after the screening and then we gravitated to the Dauphin Grille to celebrate the launch. Good times! Only in Asbury Park Where Music Lives!
Sunday brought us an amazing Restaurant Tour hosted by and operated by the AP Chamber of Commerce. The city was packed with curious visitors that jumped from restaurant to restaurant sampling all of our wonderful offerings. Congratulations to Jackie Pappas, Executive Director of the Chamber who orchestrated the event. Delicious!
Without coming up for air: It’s First Saturday, our monthly celebration of all that is good in the city – and there’s a lot to celebrate. This month it’s “Carousel in AP” Check out our great shops, art galleries and of course our restaurants. The free trolley will be running courtesy of Premier Theatre, Rich’s Auto Body. Free parking in the Bangs Avenue Garage is sponsored by TAKA. First Saturday is always a great time! Only in Asbury Park!

Come early on Saturday for some more great happenings; the AP Field Day event will take place on Saturday morning form 10 am to 2 pm on the 4th Avenue Beach and boardwalk. Lots of activities for the kids, wellness education and it’s free.
The 20th Annual Justice For Quianna Dees March will also take place on Saturday starting at 11 am at The Middle School.
The John C. Conover Agency will be hosting “Eat & Greet” an Open House Tour featuring a variety of properties for sale in Asbury Park, Interlaken & Wanamassa Each featured property will have a sampling from the menu of one of the may fabulaous restaurants in ASbury Park. The participating eaterie and shops include Asbury Park Roastery, Colonels’ Kissing Booth, et al-Fine Foods & Events, Fish Urban Dining, Ivan & Andy’s, Lush-Uplifting Spirits, McLooone’s Asbury Grille, Porta, Pucker-Lemonade & Beachfries, Pure Juice Bar, Tony’s Sausuage, Dogs & Cheesesteak and Twisted Tree Cafe. And there’s no charge. So come out, check out some geat properties, and sample some great fare from Asbury Park’s great restaurants and shops.
And stay over for Sunday. The Annual NJ Aids Walk will begin Sunday with registration at the Center in Asbury Park located at 806Tthird Avenue at 11 am and the walk kicks off at 1 pm. Also a leg of the NJ Marathon which starts in Long Branch will come through the city. One of my favorite groups, the Micro Machines will be performing live at the 4th Avenue green space on the boardwalk from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm.

At last night’s City Council a presentation was made to introduce the city to th econcept of electric fuel stations. Stay tuned!

Can you feel it? Something’s in the air and it’s called Bamboozle. If there is anyone out there that has not heard it yet, the Bamboozle music festival is coming to Asbury Park May 18, 19 & 20, 2012. There is significant activity going on down by the waterfront. New sidwalks, new landscaping and the normal anticipation that summer is on its way. We are expecting thousands to flock to the city for three days of fun and music. There will be a public meeting for all residents scheduled for Monday, May 7th at 6:30 pm at the Paramount Theatre to explain what will be happening that weekend. The following morning, May 8th at 8 am in the City Hall Council Chambers, there will be a second informational meeting for Asbury Park business owners and operators. Asbury Park Where Music Lives. As I have mentioned, the past four weeks, the Asbury Park Musical Heritage Foundation will host a launch celebration on April 28th at The Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel. Part of this celebration will include the premier of Asbury Park Musical Memories. I am excited to share that the screening has SOLD OUT! We no longer have complementary tickets. A special Pre-launch Fundraiser Cocktail Party will take place prior to the screening. We still have tickets for the fundraiser available. A ticket for the fundraiser is $75 and includes a ticket to the screening. If you would like to purchase tickets for the fundraiser, stop by City hall or call me at 732.502.5749. The AP Restaurant tour makes its debut this Sunday, April 29th from noon to 4 pm. This event is hosted by the AP Chamber of Commerce and will feature one-of-a-kind samplings from over 25 restaurants, lunges, juice bars and bakeries. Participating venues are located downtown, on and off Main Street and at the boardwalk. Restaurant tour wristbands are sold in advance for $30.
